Round Four Player of the Week

As round four rolled around there has been some trends emerging from the still young season.  Some are surprising like Patrick Mills’ poor shooting (41%) or Andrew Warren’s bi-polar game nights (efficiency of -2, 22.5 and -2 in his three rounds).  On the other hand, some things are predictable like the tide as Julian Khazzouh continues his fine form, notching big numbers (18.4 points, 10 rebounds per game) while Kevin Lisch and Shawn Redhage are leading the charge for Perth.  But one thing that has stood out is all the younger players asserting their dominance in the league, highlighted by our joint Player of the Week winners.

Round Four Dabster Award Winners

Stephen Weigh, Adelaide 36ers – 1 game, 16 points (4/9 FG, 3/7 3P, 5/6 FT), 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, 1 steal and 3 turnovers.  Efficiency – 24.0

Weigh must read this Blog because after being awarded “Worst Player of the Round” last round he backs it up with a supreme performance to give the 36ers their first win of the season.  Number 3 was everywhere, not only scoring but grabbing rebounds (third most for the round) and racking up defensive stats by the bucket load.  Three turnovers are respectable for someone playing 36 minutes as he well and truly deserves this round’s Co-Dabster Award.  But he was tied with...

Daniel Johnson, Adelaide 36ers – 1 game, 22 points (9/12 FG, 4/5 FT), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 4 turnovers.  Efficiency – 24.0

The 36ers were electric against the previously undefeated Wildcats and it was all down to their young guns.  Johnson may have been underrated to start the season but he has solidified himself as a top tier centre in the league.  Only missing three shots on his way to 22 points he dominated the Perth frontline to be crowned Co-Dabster Award winner.

Honourable mentions –
Nathan Croswell, Adelaide 36ers – 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals.  Eff – 21
CJ Bruton, New Zealand Breakers – 21 points, 8 rebounds.  Eff – 19
Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 16 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists.  Eff – 19
Tim Coenraad, Wollongong Hawks – 2 games, 14.5 points (10/16 FG), 6.0 rebounds.  Eff - 18.5
Dusty Rychart, Cairns Taipans – 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals.  Eff – 17

Previous Dabster Award Winners -
Round 1 - Kevin Lisch (Perth)
Round 2 - Will Hudson (Gold Coast) and Alex Pledger (New Zealand)
Round 3 - Julian Khazzouh (Sydney)

Menga Award Leader board after four rounds (previous round in brackets) –

1.       (1) Kevin Lisch, Perth Wildcats – 22.0
2.       (3) Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 19.8
3.       (2) Shawn Redhage, Perth Wildcats – 18.8
4.       (9) Cedric Jackson, New Zealand Breakers – 17.6
5.       (4) Elvin Mims, Townsville Crocodiles – 17.3
6.       (8) Jacob Holmes, Townsville Crocodiles – 16.8
7.       (NR) Gary Wilkinson, New Zealand Breakers – 16.6
8.       (NR) Mark Worthington, Gold Coast Blaze – 15.5
9.       (7) Adam Gibson, Gold Coast Blaze – 15.5
10.   (6) Brad Hill, Cairns Taipans – 15.5

A small correction, my calculation for the Menga Award last week was wrong but has been corrected.  Kevin Lisch is still leading the way but the biggest eye catcher is that there are four teams with two players each in the top ten as Gary Wilkinson and Mark Worthington step into the elite status.

Worst game of the round –

Jesse Wagstaff, Perth Wildcats – 20:01 minutes, 1 point (0/6 FG, 1/2 FT), 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers – Efficiency -4.

With the two Sixer players nabbing players of the week it seems fitting for a Perth player to be awarded the Worst game of the round.  At just under half a game, Wagstaff missed half a dozen shots as well as turning the ball over twice to have a stinker of a game.

Another call for a name for this award for my (few) readers, so if you have a good one then I’m all ears.

Efficiency Rating = (Points+Rebounds+Assists+Steals+Blocks) – (Missed FG+Missed FT+Turnovers)
