Round Five Player of the Week

In most occasions, when a player gets an Efficiency Rating of over 30 then their team is going to win.  Take this week’s Dabster Award winner, who had a blinder of a game and his team won.  Not easily but still did it without breaking too much of a sweat.

Round Five Dabster Award Winner

Gary Wilkinson, New Zealand Breakers – 1 game, 29 points (13/18 FG, 3/5 3P), 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 2 turnovers.  Efficiency – 33.0

Last year it was all about Kirk Penney and the up and coming Thomas Abercrombie for the Breakers, but not this season.  Wilkinson has shown leadership and a dead eye and it was on show for all to see last Thursday night.  29 points is a lot in this defensive league but to do it on only 18 shots makes this exhibition even more special.  Throw in nine rebounds and a block there isn’t any doubt in who should win this award.

Honourable mentions
Brad Robbins (Perth) – 16 points (7/8 FG), 6 rebounds, 6 steals.  ER - 27
Diamon Simpson (Adelaide) – 20 points, 8 rebounds.  ER - 24
Julian Khazzouh (Sydney) – 13 points, 16 rebounds, 2 blocks.  ER - 21
Cedric Jackson (New Zealand) – 16 points, 11 assists.  ER - 21
Kevin Lisch (Perth) – 17 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists.  ER – 19

Previous Dabster Award Winners -
Round One – Kevin Lisch (Perth)
Round Two – Will Hudson (Gold Coast) and Alex Pledger (New Zealand)
Round Three – Julian Khazzouh (Sydney)
Round Four – Stephen Weigh (Adelaide) and Daniel Johnson (Adelaide)

Round Five Menga Award Leader board
1.       (1)  Kevin Lisch, Perth Wildcats – 21.4
2.       (2)  Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 20.0
3.       (7)  Gary Wilkinson, New Zealand Breakers – 19.3
4.       (4)  Cedric Jackson, New Zealand Breakers – 18.2
5.       (3)  Shawn Redhage, Perth Wildcats – 17.8
6.       (5)  Elvin Mims, Townsville Crocodiles – 17.3
7.       (6)  Jacob Holmes, Townsville Crocodiles – 16.8
8.       (8)  Mark Worthington, Gold Coast Blaze – 15.5
9.       (9)  Adam Gibson, Gold Coast Blaze – 15.5
10.   (NR)  Diamon Simpson, Adelaide 36ers – 15.0

Another week and another new player into the top ten, this time Adelaide’s import Diamon Simpson.  I really don’t want to the whole “Diamon in the rough” line that most reports are using, but saying that I did just use that line.  Whoops.  It seems that the top five or so are breaking away from the pack with three or four other players hanging around the fifteen point mark.

Worst game of the round
Deba George, Cairns Taipans – 10:39 minutes, 3 points (1/8 FG, 1/7 3P), 2 rebounds, 1 turnover.  ER: -3

I don’t usually like giving this award to players that don’t get much court time but when someone is on the court for ten and a half minutes and shoots eight times has to get tested for leather poisoning.  Rubbing salt into those wounds is that George only hit one solitary shot, a three pointer.  He also had no assists, no blocks or no steals to put together an NBA Live type performance of “me first”.  Don’t worry Deba, in the unlikely event that you are reading this take solace in the fact that Stephen Weigh backed up his WGOTR with a Dabster Award the next week.

Efficiency Rating = (Points+Rebounds+Assists+Steals+Blocks) – (Missed FG+Missed FT+Turnovers)
