New to The NBL Blog is a Player of the Week award given to the best player in the previous round of action using the Efficiency formula*. I believe that statistics cannot sum up a player’s performance but seeing as the games are on too damn late for me to watch then this formula is the best way to do it other than PER which takes a mathematical genius to work out. The award has been given the name “The Dabster” after my brother who was a fanatical NBL supporter before he moved to Japan.
Round Three Dabster Award Winner
Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 2 games, 23 ppg (.583 FG, .000 3P, .782 FT), 9 rpg, 0.5apg, 1.5bpg, 0.5spg, 0.5tpg – Efficiency 26.5
The Beast had a monster game against Adelaide with 26 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 9/15 from the field as the torn apart the 36ers’ front court on Friday, while on Sunday he had a less subdued game of 20 points and 5 rebounds. For most other players this game is anything but ‘subdued’ which shows what kind of talent he possesses.
Honorary mentions –
Kevin Lisch (Perth) – 28 points, 2 steals – Efficiency 25.0
Jacob Holmes (Townsville) – 17 points, 14 rebounds – Efficiency 21.0
Anatoly Bose (Sydney) – 2 games, 19.0 points, 8.5 rebounds – Efficiency 21.0
Gary Wilkinson (New Zealand) – 19 points, 13 rebounds – Efficiency 20.0
Adam Gibson (Gold Coast) – 11 points, 6 assists, 5 steals – Efficiency 20.0
The Menga Award is given to the best player over the whole season, calculated using the efficiency formula. It got its name after the biggest NBL nut around who actually gets paid to work with basketball statistics. I don’t think there is any other person that this award could be named after.
Round Three Menga Award Leader board -
1. Kevin Lisch, Perth Wildcats – 25.7
2. Shawn Redhage, Perth Wildcats – 19.3
3. Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 17.8
4. Elvin Mims, Townsville Crocodiles – 17.7
5. Will Hudson, Gold Coast Blaze – 17.7
6. Brad Hill, Cairns Taipans – 17.5
7. Adam Gibson, Gold Coast Blaze – 17.3
8. Jacob Holmes, Townsville Crocodiles – 17.3
9. Cedric Jackson, New Zealand Breakers – 16.5
Lisch has broken out ahead with big point numbers (24.3ppg) but has only missed twelve shots TOTAL. Add to that his five total turnovers there is no doubt that he is another level above the rest of the league.
Worst game of the Round –
Stephen Weigh (Adelaide) – 11 points (5/17 FG, 0/2 FT), 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers – Efficiency -1
Technically Jeremiah Trueman’s -2 was the worst game of the round but that came in only two and a bit minutes so should not be counted. Weigh on the other hand played over 34 minutes and shooting a miserable 29% from the field to go along with his four turnovers.
If anyone reading this blog would like to name the worst weekly performer, please post a comment in the comments section.

*Efficiency Rating = (Points+Rebounds+Assists+Steals+Blocks) – (Missed FG+Missed FT+Turnovers)
Effectively it is all the positive statistics minus the negative ones. So a player may score a lot of points but have a low efficiency because he missed a lot of shots. Patrick Mills is a great example of this as he averages 22 points per game but shoots it at 38% while turning the ball over 3.3 times per contest, giving him an efficiency rating of only 11.7.
