Round Fourteen Player of the Week

Another low scoring week, but this time there were some close games.  Three out of the five contests were decided by six or less with the Wollongong/Townsville game being the anomaly.  I really don’t know what can be done to save the Hawks’ season at the moment as it is too late to bring in a new import and the ones they are stuck with are on a downward spiral.

Dabster Award
Round Fourteen Dabster Award Winner
Jerai Grant, Sydney Kings – 23 points (10/14 FG, 3/5 FT), 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 turnover.  ER – 32.

Usually there are a few players that have dominant games that are up for contention but this week there was only one.  No offense to Cedric Jackson and Jacob Holmes but Grant was spectacular against Gold Coast.  With Julian Khazzouh having a quiet night by his standards (7/19 FG) Grant stood up and took the game over.  He played all but three and a half minutes, the lanky import was everywhere but was strangely absent from the monster blocks he usually dishes out.

Honourable mentions
Jacob Holmes (Townsville) – 13 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists.  ER – 30
Cedric Jackson (New Zealand) – 11 points, 11 assists, 9 rebounds.  ER - 27
Cameron Tragardh (Melbourne) – 2 games, 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds.  ER – 21.5
Thomas Abercrombie (New Zealand) – 18 points, 5 rebounds.  ER - 21
Andrew Warren (Cairns) – 25 points.  ER - 21
Diamon Simpson (Adelaide) – 16 points, 12 rebounds.  ER – 20
Ian Crosswhite (Cairns) – 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks.  ER – 20

He is getting closer and closer and I have a good feeling that Cedric Jackson will log a triple double this season.  It was also good to see Jacob Holmes bounce back after his below average performance last week.

Menga Award
Round Fourteen Menga Award Leader Board

3.       (4)  Cameron Tragardh, Melbourne Tigers – 18.6
4.       (3)  Daniel Johnson, Adelaide 36ers – 18.5
5.       (6)  Jerai Grant, Sydney Kings – 17.8
6.       (7)  Jacob Holmes, Townsville Crocodiles – 17.8

9.       (8)  Jamar Wilson, Cairns Taipans – 15.9
10.   (9)  Mark Worthington, Gold Coast Blaze – 15.8

No movers in or out of the top ten as Jerai Grant rides his Dabster Award all the way to fifth.  That means that the top five is made up of only three teams with Cam Tragardh squashed between the Adelaide and Sydney duos.

Zike Award
Round Fourteen Zike Award
Eddie Gill, Townsville Crocodiles – 23:05 minutes, 0 points (0/7 FG, 0/1 3P, 0/0 FT), 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 3 turnovers.  ER: -1

Oh dear.  What a month Eddie Gill has had.  In round eleven he nabbed his first Zike Award with an ER total -2, and then won the Dabster Award the next week with a blistering 33.  Next week he narrowly missed the Zike Award again with a paltry total of one, and then did win it this week with a -1 week.  I hope he works out his consistency before the playoffs or that could spell doom for the Crocs.  Laying a goose egg, Gill missed all seven of his shots to go with his three turnovers which counteracted his three assists.  Who knows, he did back up his Zike Award with a Dabster the week after, maybe he can do it again.
