Round Twenty Player of the Week

What a strange week that transpired.  First we have Cairns getting humiliated by Townsville to the tune of 32 points, and then turning around and beating Melbourne the next night by 21 points.  Crazy.  It was also a round where teams decided not to have close games, as the closest margin was eight points with the other four games having a winning margin of 21 points.  Double crazy.

This round also showed how the efficiency rating works so well.  Two examples would be two Sydney players, Ben Madgen and Julian Khazzouh.  Madgen had a respectable game of 10 points and 5 rebounds, but missed nine shots and turned the ball over five times, giving him a total of zero.  Khazzouh had a reasonable game (for anyone other than Khazzouh) with 7 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals but missed nine field goals, four free throws and turned it over 6 times resulting in a pitiful four efficiency points.  Quickly looking at the basic stats and you would think these two had decent games but look closer and that is not the case.

Dabster Award
Round Twenty Dabster Award Winner
Jesse Wagstaff, Perth Wildcats – 25 points (6/9 FG, 5/8 3P, 8/10 FT), 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 4 turnovers.  ER – 26

What a strange time Wagstaff is having recently.  In round 15 he won the Dabster Award, played well in rounds 16 and 17 then was incredibly bad with -6 and now wins his second weekly award.  This week he shot magnificently hitting five three pointers and adding eight rebounds.  With Shawn Redhage ice cold for most of the season Wagstaff has picked up the slack tremendously and will want to continue his form into the playoffs.

Honourable mentions
Thomas Abercrombie (New Zealand) – 25 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks.  ER – 25
Cedric Jackson (New Zealand) – 20 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists.  ER – 23

Yep, that’s all the players who averaged over 20 for the round.  With Cairns and Townsville doubling up, coupled with starters playing less minutes on account of the blowouts there just wasn’t anyone else who really put a good performance together.

Allen has his first poor game, only producing 11 ER so he drops to third.  Another week of minimal movement as Jackson’s great performance bumping him up two places to seventh.

Zike Award
Round Twenty Zike Award Winner
The Cairns Taipans – 43 points (18/69 FG, 2/16 3P, 5/10 FT), 37 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 0 blocks, 12 turnovers.  ER – 19.

Nineteen freaking points was all the Taipans could muster in their soul crushing defeat.  Shooting only 26% from the field they couldn’t manage double figures in both the first and fourth quarter.  Four players were held to negative points with Brad Hill the only player hitting double figures.  I know they beat Melbourne quite handsomely but this game is absolutely putrid, easily the worst team performance of the year so far.
