Round Eighteen Player of the Week

Another poor showing from a team this week, as Wollongong could only manage 50 points in their horrific loss to Gold Coast.  The highest ER on the team was a three way tie for a mind boggling six.  Ouch.  There were some good games from both Chris Warren and Luke Schenscher but because they had two games in the round they lost their chance at a Dabster Award.

Dabster Award
Round Eighteen Dabster Award Winner
Mark Worthington, Gold Coast Blaze – 25 points (9/14 FG, 1/3 3P, 6/8 FT), 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 turnovers.  ER – 22

In a game where the Bombala under 17’s could beat Wollongong Worthington had a blinder.  Hitting shots from around the court the only downside of his game is that some have said that he gets away with too much and that if his game was officiated to the standard of someone without his name he would not have got this award.  That is the way with basketball in general, the bigger the name the more stuff they can get away with, but that is for another post.  Good on Mark for his Dabster Award but next time he should try it against a team who isn’t a middling team in the SEABL.

Honourable mentions
Damian Martin (Perth) – 6 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 blocks, 2 steals.  ER – 21
Ian Crosswhite (Cairns) – 5 points (2/3 FG), 7 rebounds, 8 assists.  ER – 20

As I said at the start, Warren and Schenscher had great games in one half of their double but their second leg let them down.  Warren had an ER of 30 while Schenscher put up a 24 on Sunday night.  It is also interesting to see that the two other 20 point games were players who had 11 points between them.  Martin especially filled up the stat as he was close to a triple double.

Menga Award
Round Eighteen Menga Award Leader Board
1.       (1)  Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 21.2
2.       (2)  Myron Allen, Melbourne Tigers – 20.0
3.       (4)  Diamon Simpson, Adelaide 36ers – 17.7
4.       (3)  Daniel Johnson, Adelaide 36ers – 17.3
5.       (6)  Jerai Grant, Sydney Kings – 16.8
6.       (8)  Mark Worthington, Gold Coast Blaze – 16.8
7.       (9)  Cameron Tragardh, Melbourne Tigers – 16.5
8.       (7)  Cedric Jackson, New Zealand Breakers – 16.5
9.       (5)  Jacob Holmes, Townsville Crocodiles – 16.4
10.   (10)  Kevin Lisch, Perth Wildcats – 15.9

The Kings had a bye this week so Khazzouh and Grant stay on the same points but Grant moves up after Jacob Holmes subpar performance in his two games where he totalled 21 ER points in the round.  Myron Allen is still at 20 ER but has only played three games so if he has a bad one he will slid rapidly down the charts.

Zike Award
Round Eighteen Zike Award Winner
Jesse Wagstaff, Perth Wildcats – 19:15 minutes, 2 points (1/12 FG, 0/4 3P, 0/0 FT), 5 rebounds, 1 block and 2 turnovers.  ER: -6

Only four weeks ago Wagstaff was given the prestigious honour of being named Dabster Award winner in round 15 and now he has put up this stinker.  Usually whenever someone doesn’t hit their first five or shots they try and do something different, not shoot some more.  One of twelve Wagstaff shots went in which is terrible, especially when he is taking nearly a shot a minute.  I know I’m harping on about his woeful shooting but he played starters minutes he would be up around 2/20.  Eww.
