Round Seventeen Player of the Week

Not the best statistical week this round, with six of the nine teams scoring below their season average.  There were two main storylines this week with Ayinde Ubaka having the last laugh as his new team in Wollongong handsomely defeating his old one in Melbourne.  I’m not sure how Seamus McPeake responded but I sure do wish I was a fly on that wall.  The other story was the abhorrent display of something that definitely wasn’t basketball by Cairns.  They scored a total of 49 points while only managing 23 ER points.  Yuck.  More on that later.

Dabster Award
Round Seventeen Dabster Award Winner
Daniel Johnson, Adelaide 36ers – 21 points (9/15 FG, 0/2 3P, 3/5 FT), 16 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 2 steals and 3 turnovers.  ER – 31

Talk about filling up the stats sheet.  Even though the 36ers lost the game I’m sure Johnson can hold his head up high.  He needed to step up with Diamon Simpson shooting 2/9 from the field DJ had one of the monster nights of the season, equalling the 10th highest ER score of the season.  He did everything out there and his mid range jump shot has been money recently which opens up the rest of his game.

Honourable mentions
Myron Allen (Melbourne) – 17 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists.  ER – 23
Julian Khazzouh (Sydney) –20 points, 8 rebounds.  ER - 23
Liam Rush (Melbourne) – 18 points, 6 rebounds.  ER – 20

As I said at the top it wasn’t a good round for statistics which is shown by only four players cracking the 20 point barrier.  Liam Rush has been tearing it up over his last six games, averaging nearly 17 ER point on that stretch.

Menga Award
Round Seventeen Menga Award Leader Board
1.       (1)  Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 21.2
2.       (2)  Myron Allen, Melbourne Tigers – 21.0
3.       (4)  Daniel Johnson, Adelaide 36ers – 18.2
4.       (3)  Diamon Simpson, Adelaide 36ers – 17.8
5.       (6)  Jacob Holmes, Townsville Crocodiles – 17.1
6.       (7)  Jerai Grant, Sydney Kings – 16.8
7.       (8)  Cedric Jackson, New Zealand Breakers – 16.6
8.       (9)  Mark Worthington, Gold Coast Blaze – 16.5
9.       (5)  Cameron Tragardh, Melbourne Tigers – 16.4
10.   (10)  Kevin Lisch, Perth Wildcats – 16.2

You’re probably wondering why Cam Tragardh went from fifth to ninth while dropping 0.9 points in one week.  How does 4 points, 2 rebounds on 1/8 shooting sound?  His ER was unbelievable at zero.  So no wonder he dropped so far and is a major reason why the Tigers lost so easily to Wollongong.

Zike Award
Round Seventeen Zike Award Winner
The Cairns Taipans – 49 points (22/60 FG (37%), 3/19 3P (16%), 2/4 FT (50%)), 27 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 block, 0 steals, 21 turnovers.  ER – 23.

I thought the Breakers’ score of 32 in round 13 was going to be the worst team game of the round but, boy was I wrong.  In a round where only four players topped 20 ER three of them were equal or higher than the total Taipans score.  That is how bad they were against Gold Coast.  Alex Loughton had half their total score with 12 while Ian Crosswhite added nine which is nearly all their score.  Unluckily for Jamar Wilson his 5 points on 2/11 shooting with no other positive statistics gave him one of the worst ER scores in the round with -6.  They play Townsville next week so let’s see if they can break thirty.
