Round Ten Player of the Week

With six games over the weekend it was always going to be hard for players who had doubles to win the Dabster award.  Guys like Mika Vukona, Daniel Johnson and Gary Wilkinson all had PoTW type games but were let down by their other game.  That’s not to say that they weren’t good games as the honourable mention section demonstrates they just weren’t good enough to win the award.  There was one player who was outstanding in both his games, and although his team split the round his performances were worthy of this award.

Dabster Award
Round Ten Dabster Award Winner
Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 2 games, 18.5 points (12/29 FG, 0/1 3P, 13/15 FT), 18.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 4.0 blocks and 2.5 turnovers per game.  ER – 32.0

There isn’t a big man in the league that can hold a candle to Julian Khazzouh at the moment.  His first game, a 20/20 outing, was magnificent and it was against one of the best front courts in the whole league in Adelaide who sport Daniel Johnson and Diamon Simpson.  But to back that up with a 17 point, 16 rebound game in their loss to Townsville is staggering.  Just think, if he had only shot better (shooting 41% from the field) his numbers would be even gaudier.  No wonder Golden State are looking at him for the upcoming NBA season.

Honourable mentions
Kevin Lisch (Perth) – 23 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists.  ER - 26
Daniel Johnson (Adelaide) – 2 games, 20.5 points, 7 rebounds.  ER - 25.5
Mika Vukona (New Zealand) – 2 games, 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds.  ER - 24.5
Jamar Wilson (Cairns) – 27 points, 5 rebounds.  ER - 24
Gary Wilkinson (New Zealand) – 2 games, 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds.  ER - 23.5
Ian Crosswhite (Cairns) – 13 points, 13 rebounds, 3 blocks.  ER - 23
Adam Gibson (Gold Coast) – 10 points, 7 rebounds, 7 steals.  ER - 22
Cameron Tragardh (Melbourne) – 24 points, 7 rebounds.  ER - 21
Diamon Simpson (Adelaide) – 2 games, 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks.  ER - 20.0
Aaron Bruce (Sydney) – 2 games, 19.5 points, 5 assists.  ER - 20.0

There were another four 30+ games this round, taking the total to ten.  I might be a broken record but the league is going up and up, shown by big numbers and close games.

Menga Award
Round Ten Menga Award Leader Board
1.       (1)  Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 22.4
2.       (2)  Diamon Simpson, Adelaide 36ers – 19.5
3.       (3)  Cameron Tragardh, Melbourne Tigers – 18.3
4.       (5)  Daniel Johnson, Adelaide 36ers – 18.2
5.       (6)  Jamar Wilson, Cairns Taipans – 17.2
6.       (NR)  Gary Wilkinson, New Zealand Breakers – 17.0
7.       (7)  Kevin Lisch, Perth Wildcats – 17.0
8.       (9)  Jacob Holmes, Townsville Crocodiles – 15.9
9.       (NR)  Jerai Grant, Sydney Kings – 15.9
10.   (8)  Cedric Jackson, New Zealand Breakers – 15.8

After his six point, 4 block performance where he went 2/11 from the field netting him a ER of two, Mark Worthington has fallen all the way from number four to out of the top ten.  Newcomer Jerai Grant has steadily rose through the ranks to finally break into the big time while Gary Wilkinson’s great weekend sees him back into the top ten.  Look for Jamar Wilson to continue to climb as his numbers have been ever increasing.

Zike Award
Round Ten Zike Award
Tyson Demos, Wollongong Hawks – 15:20 minutes, 0 points (0/6 FG, 0/2 3P, 0/0 FT), 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 blocks, 0 steals and 3 turnovers.  ER: -9

I try not to ping players who don’t get much court time because the numbers can be skewed but this performance is an exception.  Fifteen minutes isn’t a whole lot but when a player stinks up a game to this magnitude it needs to be exposed.  Not only did Demos miss all six of his shots, his only stat was three turnovers.  No rebounds, no assists, nothing.  Negative nine is by far the lowest score so far this season and for Tyson’s sake let’s hope that he doesn’t play this bad again.  Just look at Stephen Weigh a few weeks back, he got the Zike Award then backed it up with the next week’s Dabster Award.  Similar to Adam Gibson last week who got an ER of 23 after his Zike Award coronation.
