Round Six Player of the Week

What an unbelievable round we had in the NBL with two games going into overtime and half of the teams breaking the 90 point barrier.  Of course all this free flowing basketball led to some massive efficiency scores but it is the ones who didn’t score big taking the focus.

After his massive round two where he averaged 22.5 ER points in two games, Andrew Warren has gone missing for the last three rounds.  Scores of -2, -1 and -2 have put him in hot water and primed to be released.

Other low scoring players were Cedric Jackson (1 ER), Gary Wilkinson (2 ER), Elvin Mims (7 ER) and the two Perth boys in Kevin Lisch (12.5 ER) and Shawn Redhage (4.5 ER) has caused a massive shift in the season leader board.

Round Six Dabster Award Winner

Cameron Tragardh, Melbourne Tigers – 1 game, 26 points (12/19 FG, 2/7 FT), 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 turnover.

I was sceptical of Tragardh being named the Tigers’ captain but he has proven me wrong all season long.  A master performance on Friday night, unfortunately he wasn’t able to get his Melbourne side over Townsville as they lost in overtime 95-88.  What he could have done was hit his free throws (going an atrocious 2/7) but grabbing 14 rebounds (the most of the round) and not turning the ball over is enough to warrant a pardon for slopping shooting.

Honourable mentions
Daniel Johnson (Adelaide) – 25 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks.  ER - 27
Adris Deleon (Gold Coast) – 21 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds.  ER - 26
Kevin Ratzsch (Sydney) – 24 points (11/19 FG), 9 rebounds.  ER - 26
Julian Khazzouh (Sydney) – 27 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists.  ER - 25
Eddie Gill (Townsville) – 30 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds.  ER - 24
Chris Warren (Adelaide) – 21 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds.  ER - 23
Peter Crawford (Townsville) – 23 points, 6 rebounds.  ER - 22
Tommy Greer (Melbourne) – 14 points (6/7 FG), 9 rebounds.  ER - 22
Jamar Wilson (Cairns) – 18 points, 10 rebounds.  ER – 20.

Phew, that is a lot of quality talent this round.  Compared to only four players over 20 ER last round you can see how well some people played and I hope that it continues for the rest of the season.

Previous Dabster Award Winners –
Round One – Kevin Lisch (Perth)
Round Two – Will Hudson (Gold Coast) and Alex Pledger (New Zealand)
Round Three – Julian Khazzouh (Sydney)
Round Four – Stephen Weigh (Adelaide) and Daniel Johnson (Adelaide)
Round Five – Gary Wilkinson (New Zealand)

Round Five Menga Award Leader board
1.       (2)  Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 20.7
2.       (1)  Kevin Lisch, Perth Wildcats – 18.9
3.       (7)  Jacob Holmes, Townsville Crocodiles – 17.2
4.       (NR)  Cameron Tragardh, Melbourne Tigers – 17.0
5.       (3)  Gary Wilkinson, New Zealand Breakers – 16.9
6.       (NR)  Ian Crosswhite, Cairns Taipans – 16.5
7.       (NR)  Daniel Johnson, Adelaide 36ers – 16.2
8.       (8)  Mark Worthington, Gold Coast Blaze – 16.2
9.       (4)  Cedric Jackson, New Zealand Breakers – 15.7
10.     (6)  Elvin Mims, Townsville Crocodiles – 15.2

After Tragardh’s massive weekend he has skyrocketed into the top five, joined by newly healthy Ian Crosswhite and young stud Daniel Johnson in the top ten.  Look for Cedric Jackson to rebound back this coming week after being embarrassed and dropping down to ninth, his worst placing so far.  Bigger news is that Julian Khazzouh has taken over top spot, dethroning Kevin Lisch after Khazzouh's great round and Lisch's below average one.

Worst game of the round – The Zike Award
Showron Glover, Wollongong Hawks – 19:17 minutes, 6 points (2/6 FG, 0/2 3P, 2/3 FT), 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 7 turnovers.  ER: -3

Glover has been poor so far this season, averaging only 3.3 ER points but this round took the cake.  It is a textbook bad game as he shot poorly while not adding to the stat sheet other than his massive seven turnovers.  Turning the ball over seven times is a death blow for players scoring 20+ points but when a player doesn’t steal or block the ball while only scoring six points it is fitting that Glover wins this award.

I have decided to name this award after myself as I am a part of the massive group of people who weren’t good enough to play in the NBL so who now sit at the computer and criticise the players who did make it.  Congratulations to Showron Glover who has won the first ever Zike Award!
