The double header is a cruel mistress for players gunning for a Dabster Award. Take Patrick Mills for example, he scored 27 ER points in his second game which would have given him the highest of the round but his subpar 10 ER in his first ruined his chances. Shawn Redhage is another victim with a negative game in his first outing negating his 18 ER in Sunday night’s game. Julian Khazzouh showed that some people can overcome this by winning round three in two games but that is a rarity.
Round Seven Dabster Award Winner
Diamon Simpson, Adelaide 36ers – 1 game, 18 points (7/11 FG, 4/5 FT), 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal, 4 turnovers. ER - 26
What makes this award surprising is that this makes it twice in four weeks that someone from the bottom feeding Adelaide has won this award. What makes it EVEN more surprising is that Simpson won the award in only 23 minutes. That’s right, in just over half a game he amassed that monster stat line while being in foul trouble all night. Sure Melbourne has a very small line-up but that shouldn’t take away from Simpson’s great play and super efficient game. Just think if he took care of the ball a bit better and cut his turnovers his number would have been higher.
Honourable mentions
Stephen Weigh (Adelaide) – 24 points, 7 rebounds. ER - 25
Anthony Petrie (Gold Coast) – 16 points (7/10 FG), 9 rebounds. ER - 21
Thomas Abercrombie (New Zealand) – 21 points, 8 rebounds. ER - 21
Matthew Knight (Perth) – 2 games, 19.0 points, 7.0 rebounds. ER - 20.5
Jamar Wilson (Cairns) – 2 games, 19.0 points (13/22 FG), 5.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds. ER - 20.5
Julian Khazzouh (Sydney) – 17 points, 11 rebounds. ER - 20
Not as many as last week but some good scores across the board. A special mention to Matthew Knight and Jamar Wilson who got their high score of 20 ER in two games.

Round Seven Menga Award Leader Board
1. (1) Julian Khazzouh, Sydney Kings – 20.6
2. (4) Cameron Tragardh, Melbourne Tigers – 17.4
3. (3) Jacob Holmes, Townsville Crocodiles – 16.8
4. (NR) Diamon Simpson, Adelaide 36ers – 16.8
5. (2) Kevin Lisch, Perth Wildcats – 16.0
6. (NR) Jamar Wilson, Cairns Taipans – 16.0
7. (5) Gary Wilkinson, New Zealand Breakers – 16.0
8. (9) Cedric Jackson, New Zealand Breakers – 15.9
9. (8) Mark Worthington, Gold Coast Blaze – 15.7
10. (7) Daniel Johnson, Adelaide 36ers – 15.3
The two big players of this round have moved into the top ten because of poor form from most of the other players on this list. Kevin Lisch is the biggest faller, going from first to second to (equal) fifth in a matter of weeks while Jacob Holmes is quietly putting together a great season. Also, I would like to offer my apologies to Cam Tragardh who I wrote off at the start of the season and is now making me eat my words.
In sadder news, Patrick Mills has been released by Melbourne to further his career in China. He leaves us with an ER of 14.9 and a huge gap in the Tigers’ back court. I will write about his impact and the way he left in the next couple of days as an extra post.
Round Seven Zike Award (Worst Game of the Round)
CJ Bruton, New Zealand Breakers – 26:45 minutes, 0 points (0/9 FG, 0/6 3P, 0/0 FT), 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers. ER: -4
Not only was CJ the worst of the round he also scored the worst for the season so far. Missing a whopping nine shots while turning the ball over three times is a heinous display for the usually great player. His play has been slowly declining this season but to not even score a point is something that he needs to think long and hard about to get his touch back.
