Post Season Review - Wollongong

The Season

A stinker.  Not only couldn’t the Hawks go on any kind of winning streak until the final two rounds of the season they went two whole months without a win, losing seven straight from round seven to round 14.  They somehow beat Cairns twice and shockingly New Zealand twice.  Not only beat the Breakers but demolished them by an average of 17 points, and one IN New Zealand!  Crazy.

What went right?

Oscar Forman stepped up his game to a point where he is a bonafide decent player, and will continue his way onto stardom.  Glen Saville and Mat Campbell were OK and Campbell went out on a high note and Sav should have gone with him.  Rhys Martin showed glimpses of being a good point guard in this league as well.

What went wrong?

Their imports were woeful apart from Ayinde Ubaka’s rescue.  Showron Glover was shown the door after turning the ball over too much and shooting terribly while Joevan Catron thought he was Allen Iverson when he should have been Charles Barkley and I’m surprised that his legs didn’t snap they were that skinny.  He won’t be missed.  Overall this team just didn’t have enough talent from head to toe and it would be a good game between Wollongong and Perth’s second unit.

Most Valuable Player

Oscar Forman.  The only Hawk to nab a Dabster Award he was the cool head that kept this team together.  He will need to become a more vocal leader on the squad with the absence of Mat Campbell.

Targets

A quality import point guard.  They were a completely different team when Gary Ervin was on the floor as he spread the court for the great shooters on this team.  They need someone like Cedric Jackson who can penetrate and dish while directing the rest of the team.  Another big man would be nice to back up Forman and Larry Davidson while they are shopping.

Next Season

As is this team just doesn’t have the sheer talent to play consistently with the elite and hopefully they can snag one or two quality imports to give this team a bit more pizzazz.  I’m guessing that next season will be Glen Saville’s last one and the rest of the players need to back him up to give him the season that he deserves.
